Staying Ahead: March 2026 Tax Deadlines for Montana Businesses

March in Billings often signals the final stretch of winter and the busiest phase of tax season. For the service-based businesses, subcontractors, and real estate professionals we serve across Montana and the surrounding states, this is the time to ensure your financial foundation is solid.

We often talk about the “three-legged stool” of business stability: keeping your books accurate, your taxes optimized, and your payroll on time. March brings a few key dates that touch on these pillars. Staying organized now allows you to make confident decisions rather than reacting to deadlines at the last minute.

Here are the critical dates and action items for March 2026.

March 10 – Employee Tip Reporting

For many service-based industries—from hospitality to personal care—tips are a significant portion of income. If you are an employee who received more than $20 in tips during February, the IRS requires you to report them to your employer by March 10.

You can use IRS Form 4070, or simply provide a written statement that includes:

  • Your signature, name, address, and Social Security number.
  • Your employer’s name and address.
  • The month or period the report covers.
  • The total tips received during that period.

Why This Matters for Employers

If you own a business, this reporting is crucial for keeping that “payroll leg” of your stool steady. You are required to withhold FICA and income taxes on these reported tips from the employee's regular wages. If their wages aren't enough to cover the withholding, you will need to report the uncollected amount in box 8 of their W-2. Accurate reporting now prevents payroll headaches later.

March 16 – The “Let’s Connect” Deadline

With the April individual filing deadline just a month away, our calendar is filling up rapidly. If you haven't scheduled your tax appointment yet, we strongly recommend calling us by March 16.

Our firm is built on Montana values: simplicity and honesty. We know that gathering paperwork can feel overwhelming, especially for busy subcontractors and small business owners juggling $100K to $500K in revenue. Please do not feel like you need to have every single receipt perfectly organized before you call.

If you don't have all your information ready, don't worry. We can simply start a list of missing items during our appointment. Once you track them down, you can forward them to us. The most important step is getting into the queue.

A Note on Extensions

Sometimes, doing things right takes a little more time. Even if you suspect you'll need an extension, we should still connect now to prepare a preliminary return. This allows us to estimate your tax liability so you can pay what is owed by the April deadline, minimizing interest and penalties. We can then file the extension for you, giving us time to optimize your return without the stress of a ticking clock.

Standard Rules & Disaster Relief

Weekends & Holidays Rule:
As always, if a due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the deadline is automatically pushed to the next business day.

Disaster Area Extensions:
Natural events can disrupt business as usual. If a geographical area is designated as a disaster area, tax due dates are typically extended to provide relief. To check if your area is affected, you can consult the official resources below:

We provide solutions that are practical and personal. If you have questions about these dates or need to schedule your appointment, please reach out today.
