Essential January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Businesses

As January 2026 approaches, businesses, employers, farmers, and fishermen need to be prepared for key tax deadlines. By planning ahead, you can ensure compliance, avoid penalties, and keep your operations running smoothly.

January 15 - Due Date for Employer's Monthly Deposits

For employers who adhere to the monthly deposit schedule, January 15 marks the deadline for submitting Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income tax for December 2025. If you have nonpayroll withholding for December, it's due on this date as well. Except for businesses with a deposit liability under $2,500 for a return period, all employment tax deposits should be made electronically. These smaller employers may choose to file payments quarterly or annually along with their tax return.

January 15 - Estimated Tax Payments for Farmers and Fishermen

Farmers and fishermen must pay their estimated tax for 2025 using Form 1040-ES by January 15. If you miss this deadline, you will need to file your 2025 tax return and pay any taxes owed by March 2, 2026, to avoid penalties. The final date to file your 2025 income tax return (Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR) is April 15. Taking care of these obligations promptly supports the "three-legged stool" of business stability, which ensures accurate bookkeeping, optimized taxes, and timely payroll management—central pillars that underpin business confidence and growth.

Adjusting for Weekends and Holidays

If a deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the due date extends to the next business day that isn't a holiday, providing additional time to meet your obligations.

Special Considerations for Disaster Areas

Affected by a designated disaster area? Your tax deadlines may be extended. Check the FEMA and IRS websites for details on current disaster declarations and filing extensions:
