Did You Miss Key OBBBA Tax Breaks in 2025?

As a business owner or subcontractor navigating the tax landscape from Billings across Montana and neighboring states, you know that missing a deduction directly hits your bottom line. At our firm, we base business stability on a three-legged stool: accurate books, on-time payroll, and optimized taxes. When the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) took effect in mid-2025, it introduced major tax benefits. Recent Treasury data shows over 53 million individual filers claimed at least one of these new provisions. Yet, due to complex transitional rules, many eligible hardworking taxpayers left money on the table.

The Biggest OBBBA Deductions Claimed This Season

Let us look at the numbers. Overall, the IRS processed roughly 120 million individual returns by early April, issuing 80 million refunds totaling nearly $274 billion. The average refund jumped 11 percent to $3,462. Here is where those tax savings originated:

  • Overtime (OT) Deduction: More than 25 million filers utilized this, saving an average of $3,100.
  • Tip Income Deduction: Claimed on over 6 million returns, with an average deduction just above $7,100.
  • Enhanced Senior Deduction: Over 30 million older taxpayers claimed an average near $7,500. While capped at $6,000 per eligible senior, qualifying married couples filing jointly secured up to $12,000.
  • Auto Loan Interest: Just over 1 million filers deducted interest on American-made vehicle loans.
  • Standard Deduction & Trump Accounts: The permanently doubled standard deduction benefited well over 100 million filers. Additionally, 5 million Trump Accounts were established for minors under 18, though these do not yield an immediate tax deduction.

Why Did So Many Service Professionals Miss Out?

Despite administration officials praising the rollout, independent polling by the Bipartisan Policy Center reveals a glaring awareness gap. For instance, 27 percent of surveyed individuals earned overtime pay, but only 15 percent claimed the OT deduction. Similarly, 17 percent earned tips, yet a mere 10 percent took the tip deduction.

The 2025 Reporting Confusion

If you run a service-based business earning between $100K and $500K—whether in real estate, subcontracting, or retail—these gaps likely sound familiar. The primary culprit? The 2025 transitional rules. Form W-2s and 1099s were not updated in time to separately break out qualified overtime or cash tips. Without employers and payors being required to provide distinct totals, many tax preparers and individuals lacked the proper documentation to compute the deductions accurately. Throw in complex income phaseouts, strict occupation restrictions, and heavy recordkeeping demands, and it is easy to see why perfectly eligible taxpayers bypassed these new benefits to avoid the headache.

Montana Values and Your Next Steps

We believe in building on Montana values: simplicity, honesty, and lasting relationships. We provide practical, personal tax planning solutions to ensure your filings are fully optimized and your business stays compliant. If your 2025 return was filed without taking advantage of the OBBBA provisions—particularly the overtime or tip deductions—you still have options to recover that capital.

A strong tax strategy is an ongoing process. We can review your recent filing, untangle the confusing payroll documentation, and prepare an amended return if you qualify for overlooked refunds. Let us keep the tax leg of your business stool sturdy. Contact our Billings office today to schedule a review of your 2025 returns.
